About
Laura Bowery began riding at the age of three, eventually developing a dream of becoming a member of the United States Equestrian Team. In 1999, she realized that dream as a US Equestrian Team member and winner of two Nations Cups.
Laura began riding in Huntington, New York with the Rice family. She competed successfully in the junior ranks, riding in all three equitation finals (Medal, Maclay, USET) from the age of twelve to seventeen.
As a professional, she continued to work with the Rice family and later had the opportunity to work for Margie Goldstein-Engle. At Margie’s stable in Florida, she managed, groomed, and rode some of the top horses in the country at the time, such as Salute and Daydream.
In her professional career, Laura has worked with and continues to compete against some of the sport’s greatest riders and trainers: McLain Ward, Rodrigo Pessoa, Jimmy Torano, Anne Kursinski, Normal Dello Joio, Katie Moynahan-Prudent, and Joe Fargis.
She owns and operate Sea-Aire, Inc., a top show jumping, hunter, and equitation stable based in Water Mill, New York. Laura is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Hampton Classic.
Training with Laura means embracing the dedication and practice required to perfect riding skills at every level. Clients benefit from Laura’s insatiable thirst for knowledge about the sport, her enthusiasm for expanding her clients’ riding abilities, and her exceptional talent for teaching others what she has learned over the years.
Drawing on a broad range of experiences and guidance from mentors, Laura has developed a curriculum that prioritizes the horse. Like many European coaches, she believes in a multi-disciplinary approach to riding. With over 26 years immersed in the equestrian world, Laura remains as passionate about learning as ever, drawing insights from riders ranging from Olympic dressage gold medalists to cowboys. A quick look at videos of her victories reveals how skills from tempis, gymnastics, and barrel racing have evolved into flawless flying changes, precise combinations, and razor-sharp turns on Grand Prix courses.
Laura considers sharing knowledge one of her greatest achievements and often imparts her expertise to fellow professionals. She takes great pleasure in offering young riders the same opportunities she once received, which is why she has mentored working student Kelsey Calabro. Laura’s clients—some of whom have been training with her long enough to see their children now riding under her guidance—still enjoy the challenge and hard work, with smiles and ribbons to show for it.
Training
Training with Laura delivers results that clients truly appreciate: consistent improvement and success, both in and out of the show ring.
As a trainer and competitive rider, Laura’s exceptional ability to convey her passion for the sport helps cultivate and develop her clients' talents, while channeling their drive to succeed.
Laura’s expertise in training horses at all levels speaks for itself, with notable successes including Florin du Murier, Indy Star II, Gandini’s Skyboy, Altesse du Boele, Renoir, and Aiglifin, among others.
Equitation
As a seasoned equitation rider and coach, Laura is deeply experienced in the process of refining equitation style and making subtle adjustments that lead to top ribbons. Having spent years in the horse show world, she is also well-versed in what is often many young riders' first exposure to a highly competitive environment. Through her guidance as a coach, her own competitive performances, and her relationships with peers, Laura has earned the respect and recognition of the equestrian community. Her competitive spirit and sense of sportsmanship inspire her students, helping them navigate both the growth opportunities and challenges present in the competition arena.
Years after competing in her first equitation class, Laura entered the ring once again for an equitation exhibition class at WEF, where past Olympians, past representatives of the USET, and Pan American Games riders were invited to participate. For the class, riders competed on borrowed horses. Scoring an impressive 86.6 on an unfamiliar mount, Laura showcased her continued mastery of equitation competition. George Morris, the commentator for the video below, described her round as “demonstrating naturalness, pace, and relaxation,” adding that she was “well-deserving of her score.”
